Mongolia is home to the southernmost indigenous reindeer-herding people in the world, the Tsaatan or Dukha. One of the 20 ethnic groups in Mongolia is the Darkhad people or Tsaatan know as Reindeer Herders. They live in tepees near Khuvsgul Lake and in the taiga forest of the remote northern area of Khuvsgul Province. They herd reindeer for their existence and use reindeer for many purposes: transport, meat, milk, skins for clothes, blood-horns for traditional medicine and other uses. A visit to the Tsaatan community of reindeer herders is great experience. It is rare chance to see their unique traditional way of lifestyle.
In the morning we will transfer to airport, take domestic flight to Murun, central town of Khuvsgul province. Flight takes around 1 hour 30 minutes. Meet with our team. Get permission and prepare for next day and short shopping in interesting local market. Have lunch in Murun. Then embark of Darkhad Depression.
Drive to Tsagaan Nuur village in Darkhad Depression. Today we will meet our horse guide. We will stay in a valley surrounded by mountains, the fields dotted with sheep, yak, horses, and local families that will invite you into their homes, engage in conversation with us, and allow us to take photos of them as they live as they did for generations.
Today starting our horseback adventure trip to Tsaatan tribe in taiga. Enjoy horseback riding and the surrounding natural beauty. Mongolia is called “Land of Blue Sky” because the sky clears most time during the year and is the sunniest country in the world. In the evening, the stars are quite bright and the view at night is spectacular even with the naked eye with the stars appearing so close you can reach up and touch them
After breakfast we will keep horse riding to Tsaatan tribe. Afternoon will reach and visit the Tsaatan – Reindeer Herders. People in Khuvsgul most commonly practice shamanism and some of the most powerful shaman live in this area.
Full day explore their special way of the life. Learn their unique traditions such as milking reindeers, make a dairy product. We have enough time to talking with them local culture, how the live-in remote place for generation to generation. Also, we enjoy nature beauty such us larch forest, wild flora and fauna
Today we will say “goodbye” to Tsaatan people. To saddle horses, ride back to Tsagaan Nuur village. Overnight in the tent
Today the landscape changes from forest to open steppe, it gives you chance galloping by horses. Afternoon we will meet our driver.
Drive to Khuvsgul Lake which is well known the “Blue pearl” of Mongolia because of its crystal-clear water. It is 136 kilometers long and 36 kilometers wide, 265 m deep and at 1.645 meters above sea level. It is the second-most voluminous freshwater lake in Asia, and holds almost 70% of Mongolia’s fresh water and 0.4% of all the fresh water in the world. Also, the lake surrounded by alpine mountains, which are covered with thick taiga. Explore flora and fauna
Relaxing enjoying yourself day after few days horse riding. Afternoon we will make hiking to nearby mountain to see a great view of Khuvsgul Lake
After an early breakfast drive back to Murun and fly back to Ulaanbaatar. It takes 3 hours. Pick up and transfer to your accommodation. If we have time, we will go to Black Market, or optional go to shopping for souvenirs and cashmere products.
